NPD Says Nintendo DS and Wii Finish 1 and 2 in August U.S. Sales

Nintendo DS™ and Wii™ again topped the hardware sales charts for August, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. In August, more than 514,000 portable Nintendo DS systems sold in the United States, bringing the lifetime U.S. total to nearly 22 million. In August, more than 448,000 Wii consoles sold in the United States, bringing the lifetime U.S. total to nearly 12 million and extending its lead as the best-selling video game console of this generation.

Five games made for Nintendo systems placed in the top 10 best-selling games of the month, including Wii Fit™ at No. 4 with nearly 395,000 sold, Mario Kart® Wii at No. 5 with nearly 329,000 sold, Wii Play™ at No. 6 with more than 200,000 sold, Madden NFL 09 All-Play for Wii at No. 9 with nearly 116,000 sold and Guitar Hero: On Tour for Nintendo DS at No. 10 with more than 111,000 sold.

“The positive public response to Nintendo DS and Wii has stayed strong throughout 2008,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “New titles like Madden NFL 09 All-Play for Wii have joined top 10 veterans like Wii Fit, demonstrating the wide and long-lasting appeal of Nintendo games.”

POTPOURRII (PUZZLE GAME, 800 Wii points): La tematica es similar a tetris con el sistema de los bloques, pero lo que le da el toque diferente es que en el hay estaciones climaticas., primavera , verano, otoño e invierno y cada una con una forma diferente de game play con bloques distintos.

Metroid Prime Developers Breakaway to EA
Three core designers of classic game form new studio Armature.

UK, September 16, 2008 - Principal developers on the modern classic Metroid Prime have formed their own studio and established a publishing deal with Electronic Arts.

Retro Studio's Metroid Prime was one of the definitive titles on Nintendo's GameCube, and the game's director, art director and principal tech engineer have all broken away to form their own Austin based studio Armature, announced in a statement picked up by Gamasutra.

EA's Louis Castle, who is Armature's acting executive producer, said, "I can't begin to describe how thrilled I am to be working with the talented team that created such an amazingly well-crafted series of games."

"What really gets me going is that now, no platform is off limits. That is just something we didn't have the ability to do before," said Mark Pacini, who was game director on Metroid Prime.

El nuevo Nintendo DSi es un 12% más pequeña, unos 2,6 milímetros, pero la pantalla es más grande (3,25 " frente a 3"). Y además la ranura para juegos de GBA ha sido suprimida. Incluye una cámara de 0.3 Megapixels y reproductor de audio, y permite la edición de imágenes en la pantalla táctil. Incluye navegador web y un programa para detectar hotspots. También un nuevo sistema operativo (tercer botón).

Two weeks for the price of one this time around. We have the WiiWare debuts of Strong Bad 3 in the Americas, with Brain Challenge and Space Invaders Get Even in PAL. For VC, we have Earthworm Jim, Castlevania 3, and Mega Man 3.









-Tetris Party, My Aquarium, Bomberman Blast, and Mega Man 9 continue their lockdown of the top 4 worldwide

-Bottom fourth of the worldwide chart has the new releases of the last two weeks in the Americas and in PAL that managed to chart.
-Bomberman Blast goes bronze worldwide, while Defend Your Castle hits the silver mark worldwide.








-Earthworm Jim is the only new release to chart worldwide, though Castlevania III and Mega Man 3 showed up in the PAL and Japan charts, respectively.
-Other than these, it's still the Super Mario show at the top of the charts, with not much changed elsewhere.
-Secret of Mana has fallen off a bit in the Americas, bringing its worldwide ranking down as well.

Huge week across the board. Nintendo platforms sell huge numbers once again. Next week, figures will be down, but it looks like most platforms are set to meet or exceed shipment expectations for the year ending March 2009.

In the last full week of videogame sales in 2008, nearly three dozen games sold over 100,000 copies. The week ending December 20th is the biggest of 2008, since the following week only includes six “real” shopping days. Nintendo managed to sell nearly 2 million pieces of hardware in the Americas this week, out of 3.2m units across the six major platforms. Year over year sales are up as well, which is impressive given that the comparable week last year ended December 22, putting it closer to the Christmas Eve peak.

Holiday sales for the big three in the Americas suggest that they are on target to meet shipment goals. Nintendo expects to ship 51.95m Wiis between the November 2006 launch and March 2009. To reach that level or exceed it, shipments will likely reach 47m units or more at the end of 2008, which is about the correct pace for 52m shipped by the end of March. Sony expects to have shipped 22.85m PS3s at the end of March 2009, and that figure looks attainable as well, with shipments of PS3 likely topping 20m units this week. PSP shipments are forecast by Sony to reach about 53m by March 2009, while PS2 shipments are forecast to reach 139m by March 2009 (after shipping 130 million through March 2008 - see page 33). The PSP figure looks a bit high at this point, given that PSP is selling more slowly than Wii, has sold fewer units to date now as well, and has a higher March 2009 target than Wii does. The PS2 figure on the other hand should be achievable, given that Sony keeps pushing the console into small new markets. Microsoft doesn’t provide shipment forecasts anymore, but the Xbox 360 will be hitting 30m units shipped in early 2009.

- Activision sold over 1.11m units of Guitar Hero games this week (all versions combined).

- Wii topped 20m units this week in the Americas.

- Seven publishers sold at least 1 million videogames this week.

- With 3.19m units of hardware sold this week, selling your game to even 1 out of 100 new customers brings in at least $1 million in revenue if the game bought is a new release (Revenue >= 3.2m * $35 * .01).

- Uncharted: Drakes Fortune topped 1m units in the Americas this week.

- Shooter Shoot-out: Resistance 2 has sold 570,000 units on PS3, while Gears of War 2 has sold 2.48m units on Xbox 360. In the Americas, the Xbox 360 has over a 2:1 user base advantage over PS3. However, the 2480k:570k software ratio is about 4.35:1 which suggests Xbox 360 owners also prefer shooting games 2:1 over PS3 owners, even with the user base factored out.

- Charting million sellers in the top 200: Wii – 14, Xbox 360 – 20, PS3 – 7.

- To date, 42,624,361 Wiis, Xbox 360s, and PS3s have been sold in the Americas. Of those machines sold, 47% are Wiis, 36% are Xbox 360s, and 17% are PS3s.
